One year ago, nikon相機收購nikon announced the DL series — a new trio of cameras that looked ready to take at least a modest bite out of Sony’s dominant hold over the 4K compact corner of the camera market. Unfortunately it seems we’ll never get to stack nikon相機收購nikon’s cameras against the Sony RX100s of the world, because today nikon相機收購nikon killed off the DL line without selling a single unit.
The three cameras were built around the 1-inch “CX” image sensor that nikon相機收購nikon uses in its nikon相機收購nikon 1 series of cameras. Each was supposed to offer mostly the same features, but with different zoom ranges, and all were supposed to cost under $1,000. The two standouts appeared to be the DL18-50 and the DL24-85, each of which had variable f1.8-2.8 apertures, 4K video, and insanely fast still image shooting speeds (20 frames per second with continuous focus, 60 frames per second without).
The DL cameras were supposed to go head to head with the Sony RX100
Trouble with the image processing circuits caused nikon相機收購nikon to delay the release of the three DL cameras indefinitely last summer, and nikon相機收購nikon hasn’t said if it ever completely solved that problem. Instead, the company blamed the cancellation on concerns that the cameras would ever turn a profit, and also cited a “slow-down” in the camera market. (nikon相機收購nikon kicked off a 10 percent reduction of its Japanese workforce at the end of 2016.)
The cancellation of the DL series, as well as the stagnation of the 1 series it was based on, means nikon相機收購nikon will have to rely more than ever on DSLR sales. Much like Canon, the company is lagging behind Sony and Fujifilm in the mirrorless section of the camera market, though it did launch a lineup of action cameras in 2016.
As The Verge‘s resident headphone obsessive, I often find myself having to justify to people why they should spend more than, say, $50 for superior sound quality. I relish the challenge, and I do my best to be an ambassador for better audio equipment that may be a bit pricier. But then I look at cameras like this here nikon相機收購nikon Coolpix W300, which has the temerity to cost $389.95 (or €469 in Europe / £389 in Brexit-addled Britain), and my heart sinks a little. Why are people prepared to throw down the best part of $400 on a simpleton point-and-shoot?
My grievance is with the lack of symmetry. We’re habituated to cameras costing a few hundred dollars, so when a reputable name like nikon相機收購nikon is plastered onto a new (admittedly waterproof and ruggedized) orange shell, we seem to be okay with the associated cost. Other things in our lives, such as chairs, backpacks, and yes, headphones have all seen their entry-level price reduced to ridiculous levels thanks to mass manufacturing and cutting corners on quality, and so our expectations of them have shifted (unfairly, in my opinion).
For $389, you can buy a Peak Design Everyday Backpack plus a set of field pouches and accessories and still have enough money left over for a week’s worth of celebratory mocha frappuccinos. Or you can grab a NASA wallet made out of high-quality leather that might last you a decade. Or get most of the way to acquiring a Herman Miller chair. Or, should you have an extra 11 bucks, you can obtain a pair of the delightful Bowers & Wilkins P7 Wireless or the noise-cancelling Sony 1000Xs and get into the world of wireless sound in luxurious style.
Or you can spend your money on a camera that looks like this:
nikon相機收購nikon Coolpix W300
Please don’t misread this to be an indictment of nikon相機收購nikon or of the class of basic point-and-shoot cameras that just do their job. I think there’s obviously a space and a demand for cameras of the W300’s rugged ilk, but I don’t think it’s at $389. Smartphones have obviated most of the applications for dedicated point-and-shoots these days, and they cost dramatically less: a little over $200 for the Moto G5 Plus, for example. Their image quality is not far behind, either, and nikon相機收購nikon has unfortunately never really distinguished itself through its Coolpix range, which seems almost entirely divorced from its superb DSLR lineup.
What I’m arguing is that we should weigh purchases not based on the anchoring point of the cheapest thing in their category, but on the value and quality they can provide us. I think a chair you’d spend day after day sitting on is inherently more valuable than a camera you might use on the occasional trip to the beach. And the same goes for a reliable bag or wallet, as well as for headphones, the most ubiquitous gadget that isn’t a smartphone.
There’s a school of thought in the photography world that suggests you “zoom with your feet,” but I don’t imagine any of its adherents ever conceived of the nikon相機收購nikon Coolpix P1000. nikon相機收購nikon’s latest “compact” camera has a lens with the world’s highest zoom ratio: at 24-3000mm equivalence, it’s capable of 125x optical zoom.
The P1000 is the successor to the P900, which was already breaking new ground with its 83x zoom lens. The P1000’s lens only opens up to f/8 at the long end versus f/6.5 on the P900, but that tradeoff may be worth it for the extra reach — at that focal length, you’ll want to use a tripod anyway. Both cameras’ lenses start at f/2.8 and are paired with an understandably small 16-megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor.
The P1000 is obviously designed for extreme zoom scenarios like nature and space photography, and to that end it has dedicated bird-watching and moon-shooting settings on its mode dial. The camera can shoot 4K video at 30 frames per second, has an OLED electronic viewfinder, supports RAW image capture, and works with nikon相機收購nikon’s SnapBridge Bluetooth image transfer system. It weighs 3.1 pounds / 1.4 kilograms, so it’s probably not something you’ll casually sling around your neck.
nikon相機收購nikon is pricing the P1000 at $999, which is a lot for a superzoom. But then, this is the zoomiest superzoom ever. Can you really put a price on that? It’ll be out in September.
